    The Horizontal Branch of NGC 1851: Constraints from its RR Lyrae Variables

    We use the pulsational properties of the RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster NGC 1851 to obtain detailed constraints of the various sub-stellar populations present along its horizontal branch. On the basis of detailed synthetic horizontal branch modeling, we find that minor helium variations (Y~0.248-0.280) are able to reproduce the observed periods and amplitudes of the RR Lyrae variables, as well as the frequency of fundamental and first-overtone RR Lyrae stars. Comparison of number ratios amongst the blue and red horizontal branch components and the two observed subgiant branches also suggest that the RR Lyrae variables originated from the progeny of the bright subgiant branch. The RR Lyrae variables with a slightly enhanced helium (Y~0.270-0.280) have longer periods at a given amplitude, as is seen with Oosterhoff II (OoII) RR Lyrae variables, whereas the RR Lyrae variables with Y~0.248-0.270 have shorter periods, exhibiting properties of Oosterhoff I (OoI) variables. This correlation does suggest that the pulsational properties of RR Lyrae stars can be very useful for tracing the various sub-populations and can provide suitable constraints on the multiple population phenomenon. It appears of great interest to explore whether this conclusion can be generalized to other globular clusters hosting multiple populations.Comment: accepted to A

    Heavy quasiparticles in the ferromagnetic superconductor ZrZn2

    We report a study of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the normal state of the ferromagnetic superconductor ZrZn2. Our results are generally consistent with an LMTO band structure calculation which predicts four exchange-split Fermi surface sheets. Quasiparticle effective masses are enhanced by a factor of about 4.9 implying a strong coupling to magnetic excitations or phonons.     Automatic segmentation of ultrasound images of gastrocnemius medialis with different echogenicity levels using convolutional neural networks

    The purpose of this study was to develop an automatic method for the segmentation of muscle cross-sectional area on transverse B-mode ultrasound images of gastrocnemius medialis using a convolutional neural network(CNN). In the provided dataset images with both normal and increased echogenicity are present. The manually annotated dataset consisted of 591 images, from 200 subjects, 400 relative to subjects with normal echogenicity and 191 to subjects with augmented echogenicity. From the DICOM files, the image has been extracted and processed using the CNN, then the output has been post-processed to obtain a finer segmentation. Final results have been compared to the manual segmentations. Precision and Recall scores as mean ± standard deviation for training, validation, and test sets are 0.96 ± 0.05, 0.90 ± 0.18, 0.89 ± 0.15 and 0.97 ±0.03, 0.89± 0.17, 0.90 ± 0.14 respectively. The CNN approach has also been compared to another automatic algorithm, showing better performances. The proposed automatic method provides an accurate estimation of muscle cross-sectional area in muscles with different echogenicity levels

    Relative Frequencies of Blue Stragglers in Galactic Globular Clusters: Constraints for the Formation Mechanisms

    We discuss the main properties of the Galactic globular cluster (GC) blue straggler stars (BSS), as inferred from our new catalog containing nearly 3000 BSS. The catalog has been extracted from the photometrically homogeneous V vs. (B-V) color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) of 56 GCs, based on WFPC2 images of their central cores. In our analysis we used consistent relative distances based on the same photometry and calibration. The number of BSS has been normalized to obtain relative frequencies (F_{BSS}) and specific densities (N_S) using different stellar populations extracted from the CMD. The cluster F_{BSS} is significantly smaller than the relative frequency of field BSS. We find a significant anti-correlation between the BSS relative frequency in a cluster and its total absolute luminosity (mass). There is no statistically significant trend between the BSS frequency and the expected collision rate. F_{BSS} does not depend on other cluster parameters, apart from a mild dependence on the central density. PCC clusters act like normal clusters as far as the BSS frequency is concerned. We also show that the BSS luminosity function for the most luminous clusters is significantly different, with a brighter peak and extending to brighter luminosities than in the less luminous clusters. These results imply that the efficiency of BSS production mechanisms and their relative importance vary with the cluster mass.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. accepted for publication in ApJ

    Multimodal T2w and DWI Prostate Gland Automated Registration

    Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) is emerging as a promising tool in the clinical pathway of prostate cancer (PCa). The registration between a structural and a functional imaging modality, such as T2-weighted (T2w) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is fundamental in the development of a mpMRI-based computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system for PCa. Here, we propose an automated method to register the prostate gland in T2w and DWI image sequences by a landmark-based affine registration and a non-parametric diffeomorphic registration. An expert operator manually segmented the prostate gland in both modalities on a dataset of 20 patients. Target registration error and Jaccard index, which measures the overlap between masks, were evaluated pre-and post-registration resulting in an improvement of 44% and 21%, respectively. In the future, the proposed method could be useful in the framework of a CAD system for PCa detection and characterization in mpMRI

    Comparison of Histogram-based Textural Features between Cancerous and Normal Prostatic Tissue in Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Images

    In the last decade, multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) has been expanding its role in prostate cancer detection and characterization. In this work, 19 patients with clinically significant peripheral zone (PZ) tumours were studied. Tumour masks annotated on the whole-mount histology sections were mapped on T2-weighted (T2w) and diffusion-weighted (DW) sequences. Gray-level histograms of tumoral and normal tissue were compared using six first-order texture features. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to compare group means. Mean intensity signal of ADC showed the highest showed the highest area under the receiver operator characteristics curve (AUC) equal to 0.85. MANOVA analysis revealed that ADC features allows a better separation between normal and cancerous tissue with respect to T2w features (ADC: P = 0.0003, AUC = 0.86; T2w: P = 0.03, AUC = 0.74). MANOVA proved that the combination of T2-weighted and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map features increased the AUC to 0.88.     Mosquito magnet® liberty plus trap baited with octenol confirmed best candidate for Anopheles surveillance and proved promising in predicting risk of malaria transmission in French Guiana

    BACKGROUND: In French Guiana, Mosquito Magnet(®) Liberty Plus trap baited with octenol (MMoct) has been proposed for sampling Anopheles darlingi after comparison with CDC light trap and Human landing catch (HLC). However, other available lures were not tested. The current study compared MMoct and MM baited with Lurex™ (MMlur) to HLC, and analysed entomological data from MMoct collection with malaria cases to facilitate malaria surveillance. METHODS: Two independent experiments were conducted during 2012 and 2013 in Saint-Georges town, French Guiana. The first experiment used Latin square design to compare MMoct and MMlur to HLC between 18:30 to 22:30 and 05:00 to 07:00. Parity rate was determined for An. darlingi from each sampling system. In the second experiment, a 24:00 hour collection was done for four consecutive days during the first week of each month and every four days for the rest of the month using MMoct. Portion of the 24 hour collection was dissected for parity rate. All anophelines were screened for Plasmodium infection by PCR. Data for number of malaria cases was analysed for association with density of An. darlingi. RESULTS: In the first experiment, 3,721 anopheline mosquitoes were collected over 21 nights. Of these, 95.7% was identified morphologically to five species and An. darlingi contributed 98.4%, mainly from HLC (75.1%, CI 95% [73.2-77.0]) than MMoct (14.1%, CI 95% [12.6-15.7]) and MMlur (10.8%, CI 95% [9.4-12.2]). Species richness was highest in HLC meanwhile species diversity index was greatest in MMoct. MMoct collected more parous An. darlingi than HLC (p < 0.0001) and MMlur (p = 0.0021). The second experiment amounted to 2035 females, 60.8% belonging to 10 species. Anopheles darlingi constituted 85.0% of the species and had parity rate of 52.3%. Specimens were uninfected with Plasmodium. Density of An. darlingi best correlated with malaria cases observed six weeks later (p = 0.0016; r = 0.4774). CONCLUSION: Though MMoct and MMlur performed well in sampling An. darlingi, MMoct captured more species and, therefore, would be useful for surveillance. Even if it collected mostly parous mosquitoes, MMoct proved useful in collecting entomological data required for predicting malaria emergence. It is a potential replacement for HLC

    68Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT-Based Radiomic Analysis and PRRT Outcome: A Preliminary Evaluation Based on an Exploratory Radiomic Analysis on Two Patients

    Aim: This work aims to evaluate whether the radiomic features extracted by 68Ga-DOTATOC-PET/CT of two patients are associated with the response to peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) in patients affected by neuroendocrine tumor (NET). Methods: This is a pilot report in two NET patients who experienced a discordant response to PRRT (responder vs. non-responder) according to RECIST1.1. The patients presented with liver metastasis from the rectum and pancreas G3-NET, respectively. Whole-body total-lesion somatostatin receptor-expression (TLSREwb-50) and somatostatin receptor-expressing tumor volume (SRETV wb-50) were obtained in pre- and post-PRRT PET/CT. Radiomic analysis was performed, extracting 38 radiomic features (RFs) from the patients' lesions. The Mann–Whitney test was used to compare RFs in the responder patient vs. the non-responder patient. Pearson correlation and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to evaluate the correlation and independence of the different RFs. Results: TLSREwb-50 and SRETVwb-50 modifications correlate with RECIST1.1 response. A total of 28 RFs extracted on pre-therapy PET/CT showed significant differences between the two patients in the Mann–Whitney test (p < 0.05). A total of seven second-order features, with poor correlation with SUVmax and PET volume, were identified by the Pearson correlation matrix. Finally, the first two PCA principal components explain 83.8% of total variance. Conclusion: TLSREwb-50 and SRETVwb-50 are parameters that might be used to predict and to assess the PET response to PRRT. RFs might have a role in defining inter-patient heterogeneity and in the prediction of therapy response. It is important to implement future studies with larger and more homogeneous patient populations to confirm the efficacy of these biomarkers
